Day Three - Shopping and Wine

Thursday found us sleeping in.....like really sleeping....until 10:30!!  I thought I was totally over the jet lag, but apparently my body didn't think so.  By the time we got ready and out the door it was close to 11:30, so we went directly to our destination:  Printemps department store.

Printemps is like a upscale Marshall Fields.  Lots of floors, lots of "stuff", lots of money.  We looked a lot but didn't buy anything (I know!!! isn't that amazing?).  We found our way to the ninth floor and found a cafeteria.  Of course, those of you who know me (Jean) know I never look at prices, so I loaded my tray up with a carrot & dill soup, quiche with carrots and leaks, and a pear torte.  Jerry had a salad.  Then the bill came.  I spent more on my lunch than dinner last night.  I need to remember to look at the prices.  Jerry said he would remind me.....I'll bet he will.

After shopping at a few other stores, we walked the Rue Royale which was just a little bit slumming from Manchester, but we did find a Chanel store (the original), and Dior, and Gucci, and Dolce and Gabbana.  Chanel asked where I had found my ugly black shoes, and Gucci wanted Jerry for a photo shoot, but we turned them down.

We continued up to the Champs Elysse and then took the metro back to the apartment.  We stopped on the way home for a rest at a cafe on the street, and then stopped at a Charcuterie to buy some pate and a bakery for pastries and bread.  What a picnic!

We went out again just to sit at a cafe (seems the thing to do here) later and met some guys from Spain.  We thought they were speaking Italian (dumb us) and so we struck up a conversation.  They were visiting and going home tomorrow.  When both of our bills came, we found out the 2 glasses of wine (dinky ones, no less) were 9 E apiece (about $13.00). Their beers (just glasses) were the same.  Jerry said he would go to Spain to get our next glasses of wine, and they agreed.

One thing about the cafes is that you meet people so easily if you are friendly.  We happen to be, so we are always talking to people around us.  I think that is one of the most fun things about traveling.

We came home and ate our pate, bread, wine, and pastries. Based on the wine and pate and desserts, why would any civilized person live anywhere else? Time for bed now, even though you are just getting home from school or work.  Big day tomorrow.  Rome!!!  Bon Nuit!

PS:  We are going to stop posting pictures in the blog after a day or so and only have a slide show.  If you would like to see the pictures in a larger format, just click on them and they will come up.  This blog stuff is new to me, but I think it will work.  I hope so!

  1. I can't wait to hear all about Rome. Hess and I were talking about it last night and he said that you two are going got be home before we know it! :( Then we both said we hope we can go on a trip like this when we retire...in like 30 years. Enjoy Rome and eat LOTS of pizza. It is AMAZING over there! Love you guys!
